Miyoshi Umeki with the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Sayonara (1957).  She is the first and only Asian woman to win an Academy Award for acting.

She won an Oscar for playing a character who — take a wild guess! — commits suicide after falling in love with a white US American soldier stationed in Japan. The film stars Marlon Brando as a US soldier who is explicitly racist against the Japanese but also sleeps with Japanese women.
As you can see, Miyoshi Umeki wore a kimono to the Oscars, though she was a naturalized US citizen at that time, because, you know, Asian. The next role she landed was the Chinese character Mei Li in the Broadway musical “Flower Drum Song”, and then a recurring TV role as a broken-English-speaking housekeeper.
